There are things in life that are recommendations for our good - eat healthy, exercise, get plenty of sleep, etc. Then there are things in life that are commanded by law - pay your taxes, obey traffic laws, don’t murder anyone, etc. We tend to easily recognize the difference and act accordingly. But too often we think commands in the Bible are only recommendations. They maybe are for our good, but are optional. One of these is the command to give thanks.

This command does not seem like one of the “biggies.” We take more seriously the commands in the ten commandments, sexual purity commands, or even commands in marriage and parenting. But giving thanks is a command and theme in the Bible repeated throughout the Old and New Testaments. Giving thanks is not something that is optional in the eyes of God - it is a command to be obeyed. And to be obeyed regularly. And to be obeyed by giving thanks out loud to one another.

November is a month to give thanks. At The Rock this Sunday we are devoting our service to giving thanks to God for His goodness, mercy, and steadfast love. Come ready to obediently give thanks! Then stay for a thanksgiving meal - SIGN-UP HERE TO BRING SOMETHING. I look forward to hearing testimonies from people who are thankful this Sunday!

"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble…" - Psalm 107:1-2

Theological Word of the Week:

Redemption

Christ’s saving work viewed as an act of “buying back” sinners out of their bondage to sin and to Satan through the payment of a ransom (though the analogy should not be pressed to specify anyone to whom a ransom was paid).
