One of the creeds of the world is, “Don’t Judge!” What is behind this statement is that we should see all choices as valid and all values as equally noble. James Boice says; “The only acknowledged evil is claiming that someone else is mistaken.” Is this what Jesus is saying in Matthew 7:1; “Judge not, that you be not judged?” Of course not. But the verse remains popular even though it is mostly misunderstood. In the context of the sermon, Jesus is speaking to the issue of hypocrisy. Essentially, Jesus is saying that we should not judge until we have first judged ourselves. And we should never put ourselves in God’s place when judging others.
It is a challenging passage to take in. It applies to all of us. It convicts all of us. But, when properly understood, can lead to a beautiful realization that condemnation can be replaced by love. That is Jesus’s intention! It fits with the entire Sermon on the Mount’s call to live a Kingdom life reflecting Jesus!
