Paul has just given some final instructions to Timothy and the Ephesian church in I Timothy 6:11-16. He even concluded with a soaring prayer & benediction about God. And to top it all off, he said; “Amen.” It seems that the letter has come to a conclusion. But Paul needed to say one more thing! And I imagine that this one more thing was important. Why else would he keep going after he said; “Amen?”
The one more thing has to do with money. Maybe Paul did not want to leave the Ephesians thinking that money in itself is bad. After all, he just wrote that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Or maybe he felt like he needed to give the Ephesians some practical instructions on how they spend their money. Or both.
This Sunday is the penultimate sermon from I Timothy! We will sing, pray, hear God’s Word, take communion together, and then fellowship after service over a meal. I look forward to gathering together!
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches,, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” - 1 Timothy 6:17
