When we think of forgiveness in our personal lives, we often think from a perspective of human relationships. We think; “I need to forgive that person.” Or; “I must ask for forgiveness.” Or; “That person needs to forgive me.” But the most important form of forgiveness comes from God to us; “I have been forgiven!” The fact that we are forgiven by God gives us a heavenly perspective. We have received grace. So since we have received grace, we must give grace to others. Jesus calls us to the perspective; “Forgiven people forgive!”
This week, as we continue in the Lord’s Prayer in the Sermon on the Mount, I will focus on forgiveness. God’s forgiveness of our sin. And our forgiveness of other’s sins toward us. We need continued reminders of God’s grace in order to continue to obey God in forgiving others in our lives!
“…and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Matthew 6:12
